Back in 2019, one of my best friends sent me a gift during a difficult time when I was grappling with mental health issues and addiction. As he traveled across the country, he took a moment at an airport in the Scottish province of Canada to send me a simple yet meaningful tee: “Authentic Ginger Clothing Company” — a label that felt like it was made for me. Five years later, I've proudly represented the Roche family label on podcasts and at events, embracing my ginger identity in ways I never imagined before. Since then, I've built a business, launched a couple of YouTube channels, written a book, and devoted myself to raising an exceptional young man. My son's name, Rory, means “The Red King,” a nod to our heritage as descendants of the Ginger Kings of Ireland. "Ginger" is not a word that dehumanizes; it is a word that breathes life. It doesn’t say, "You are beneath me," but rather, "You are different." Authentic, even. Yesterday morning, Darin Roche and I reached an agreement for Rory Giffen to take over the Authentic Ginger Brand and Clothing Label, under my guidance until he turns 25. As part of this journey, 403LC will be re-launching the AG Podcast this fall, stocking shelves back in my homeland, and accepting invitations to conferences, festivals, and Highland Games. “Ginger” is not the N-word.
